Solar panels don't suddenly stop working at 25 years — and they don't have to end up in a landfill. Here's what actually happens to a system as it ages, and what to know about recycling and end of life in 2026.

"25 years" is a warranty, not an expiration date

Most panels carry a 25-year performance warranty — typically guaranteeing around 85%+ of original output at year 25. That's a floor, not a cliff. Many panels keep producing well beyond 25 years at a gradually declining rate (very roughly half a percent per year). So "end of life" usually means "no longer worth the roof space," not "dead."

What's actually in a panel

A standard panel is mostly glass and an aluminum frame, plus silicon cells, a little copper wiring, and a polymer backsheet. The glass, aluminum, copper, and silicon are all recoverable — which is exactly why a recycling industry has grown up around them.

Recycling options in 2026

Dedicated solar-panel recyclers can recover most of a panel's material — the glass and aluminum especially, and increasingly the silicon and silver. Availability varies by region (more established in some states than others) and there's usually a modest fee. The industry is expanding quickly as the first big wave of installs approaches retirement age.

Landfill vs. recycling

Panels can technically go to landfill in many places, but that wastes recoverable materials and isn't where the industry is heading — some states are moving toward recycling requirements. If sustainability is part of why you're going solar, recycling at end of life keeps the loop closed.

What to ask before you buy

• Does the installer offer (or partner for) removal and recycling at end of life?
• What do the panel and inverter warranties cover — and are they transferable if you sell the home?
• What's the panel's degradation rate? (Lower = more production in years 20–30.)

These rarely make or break a deal, but they tell you how long-term the company is thinking.
