Solar is low-maintenance, not no-maintenance. What owning panels actually requires in 2026 — cleaning, monitoring, inverter replacement, critters — and what you can ignore.
Solar panels are low-maintenance — but "low" isn't "none." A system you understand and check on will outproduce one you install and forget. Here's what owning panels actually asks of you in 2026, and what you can safely ignore.
Cleaning: less than you'd think
For most homes, rain does the majority of the cleaning. You generally only need to step in when something blocks the glass: heavy pollen, dust in dry climates, bird droppings, or ash. Dirty panels typically lose only a few percent of output, so cleaning is rarely urgent. When you do clean, use water and a soft brush from the ground if possible — don't risk climbing onto a roof, and never use harsh chemicals or abrasive tools that can scratch the glass. In dusty or high-pollen areas, once or twice a year is plenty.
Monitoring: your most useful habit
Almost every modern system comes with a monitoring app. Checking it once a month is the single most valuable maintenance task you can do. You're watching for a panel or string producing far less than its neighbors, a sudden drop in output, or an inverter showing a fault. Catching an underperforming panel early can mean a warranty fix instead of months of lost production you never noticed.
The inverter: the part most likely to need replacing
Panels routinely last 25–30+ years, but inverters work harder. A central string inverter often needs replacement somewhere around 10–15 years — budget for it. Microinverters (one per panel) tend to last longer and usually carry 25-year warranties, but a failed unit takes one panel offline until it's swapped. Either way, know which type you have and what its warranty covers.
Shading and vegetation
Trees grow. A branch that was clear at install can shade panels years later and quietly cut production — especially on string systems, where one shaded panel can drag down others. Keep nearby trees trimmed back from the array's line to the sun.
Critters and birds
The gap under panels is prime real estate for birds, squirrels, and rodents looking to nest — and they can chew wiring. If you see nesting activity, critter guards (mesh clipped around the array's perimeter) are an inexpensive fix and a common add-on — far cheaper than repairing chewed conductors.
Snow and weather (cold-climate owners)
In snowy states, panels usually shed snow on their own as they warm and the sun hits them, helped by their tilt. Clearing snow by hand is rarely worth the risk of damaging panels or yourself. Well-installed systems are built to handle wind and hail to rated limits; after a major storm, a quick look at your monitoring app tells you if anything changed.
Warranty and paperwork check-ins
Once a year, confirm you still have your warranty documents, your installer's contact info, and your monitoring login. If your installer has gone out of business (common in this industry), know that panel and inverter manufacturer warranties still apply directly — keep the model numbers handy.
What to budget
Realistically: near-zero in most years, occasional cleaning if your climate calls for it, possibly critter guards once, and a larger one-time inverter replacement if you have a string inverter. That's it. Solar's low running cost is one of its real advantages — the key is monitoring so small problems don't become invisible ones.
