9 High-Pressure Solar Sales Closes — and Exactly How to Shut Each One Down

Door-to-door solar reps run the same 9 closing scripts on everyone. Here's each one, why it works, and the exact line that defuses it.

Solar reps are trained on a tight set of closing scripts. Once you can name the tactic, it loses all its power. Here are the nine you'll hear, and how to shut each one down.

## 1. The 48-hour deadline

**The close:** "This pricing is only good through Friday." **Why it works:** manufactured scarcity triggers loss aversion. **Shut it down:** "Solar equipment is priced quarterly and labor rates are stable. If the price is real, it'll be real next week. Send it to me in writing with a 30-day validity and I'll consider it."

## 2. Today-only incentive

**The close:** "If you sign tonight, I can get you the $2,000 manager special." **Why it works:** implies you're leaving money on the table. **Shut it down:** "Then put the $2,000 in the written quote with no expiration. A real discount survives 48 hours."

## 3. The assumptive close

**The close:** "So would mornings or afternoons work better for your install?" **Why it works:** skips the decision and moves you to logistics. **Shut it down:** "I haven't decided to move forward. Before we talk install dates, I'm getting this quote independently reviewed."

## 4. The "your neighbor signed" close

**The close:** "We just put panels on three houses on your street." **Why it works:** social proof + FOMO. **Shut it down:** "Great — then you won't mind if I take a few days to compare, since you're clearly busy in the area."

## 5. The fake-callback close

**The close:** "Let me call my manager and see what I can do…" (steps away, returns with a "special"). **Why it works:** theater of effort makes the discount feel earned. **Shut it down:** "Whatever your manager approves, email it to me. I don't sign on the doorstep."

## 6. The bill-shame close

**The close:** "You're basically throwing away $200 a month to the utility." **Why it works:** weaponizes regret. **Shut it down:** "Agreed the utility is expensive — which is exactly why I'm going to make sure your alternative is actually cheaper and not just differently expensive."

## 7. The free-stuff close

**The close:** "We'll throw in the inverter / monitoring / a free upgrade." **Why it works:** the "free" item feels like found value. **Shut it down:** "Nothing's free — it's priced into the system. Show me the line-item breakdown."

## 8. The rate-lock fear close

**The close:** "Tax credits are going away, you have to act now." **Why it works:** real policy uncertainty + urgency. **Shut it down:** "The credit applies in the year the system is placed in service, not signed. I have until year-end. I'm not rushing a 25-year decision over a deadline that doesn't apply to me yet."

## 9. The relationship close

**The close:** "I've spent two hours with you, I really want to help your family." **Why it works:** guilt + reciprocity. **Shut it down:** "I appreciate your time and I'm not obligated to buy because of it. If the deal is good, it'll still be good after I review it."

## The universal defense

Every one of these closes dies to the same move: **"Send it to me in writing and I'll have it independently reviewed."** No legitimate deal is hurt by 48 hours of review. Only padded ones are.
