What Is a Fair Price Per Watt for Solar in 2026?
Price per watt is the single number that lets you compare any two solar quotes apples-to-apples. Here's the directional range, why it legitimately varies, and how to compute yours.
If you only learn one number before signing a solar contract, make it price per watt. It's the one figure that lets you put two completely different quotes side by side and actually compare them. I'm an independent solar broker, which means I don't install anything and I have no system to sell you. People send me their proposals and I read them for free and tell them straight whether the price is fair. The very first thing I calculate, every single time, is the price per watt. Here's how to do it yourself.
What "price per watt" actually means
Price per watt is the total gross system price divided by the system size in watts. If a quote is for a 9 kW system, that's 9,000 watts. Take the total price before any incentives, financing fees, or trade-ins, divide by 9,000, and you have your number. That's it.
Why does this beat comparing total prices? Because a $30,000 quote and a $24,000 quote tell you nothing on their own. The cheaper one might be a smaller system, or use weaker equipment, or skip a needed electrical upgrade. Price per watt strips all that away and shows you what you're paying for each unit of capacity. It's the great equalizer.
The directional range in 2026
Cash and standard-loan residential solar in 2026 often lands somewhere in the neighborhood of $2.50 to $3.50 per watt, with plenty of legitimate quotes above and below that band depending on the specifics below. I want to be clear that this is a directional range to orient you, not a hard number to hold a contractor to. Markets, equipment, and labor costs move, so verify it against your own current quote. Use it as a gut check, not as gospel.
If your number is sitting comfortably inside that band and the equipment looks solid, you're probably in fair territory. If it's well north of it, that doesn't automatically mean you're being cheated, but it does mean you should ask why and make sure the answer is real.
Why a fair price legitimately varies
A high price per watt isn't always a rip-off. Several honest factors push it up or down:
- System size. Smaller systems almost always cost more per watt. A lot of the price is fixed overhead, like permits, trucks, and crew time, spread across fewer watts. A 4 kW system will usually have a higher per-watt cost than a 12 kW one.
- Equipment. Premium panels and microinverters cost more than entry-level string setups. Sometimes that premium is worth it, sometimes it's just markup. The point is, better gear can legitimately raise the number.
- Your roof. A steep roof, multiple planes, tile or metal roofing, or lots of obstructions all add labor. A simple south-facing asphalt roof is cheaper to work on than a complicated one.
- Electrical work. An old main panel that needs an upgrade, or a long conduit run, adds real cost that has nothing to do with the panels themselves.
- Region. Labor and permitting costs vary a lot by state and even by city. Pricing in a high-cost metro looks different from a rural area.
- Financing. This is the big one. Many "$0-down" loans bake a large dealer fee into the price, which can quietly inflate price per watt by a wide margin versus cash or a clean loan. Same panels, same roof, much higher number.
How to compute yours in 60 seconds
Grab your proposal and find two things: the total system price and the system size. Then:
- Convert the system size to watts. Kilowatts times 1,000. An 8.5 kW system is 8,500 watts.
- Use the gross price, the one before any incentives or rebates are subtracted. Comparing one quote's pre-incentive price to another's post-incentive price is the most common mistake I see, and it makes the math meaningless.
- Divide. Total gross price divided by total watts. That's your price per watt.
Do this for every quote you have, using the gross price each time, and now you can actually compare them.
What a too-high number is telling you
If your number lands well above the directional range, work down this list before you sign:
- Is there a hidden dealer or financing fee? Ask for the cash price and the financed price separately. The gap is the fee. If a rep won't show you the cash price, that's a flag.
- Does the equipment justify it? Premium gear can earn a premium. A no-name panel at a premium price cannot.
- Is the system oddly small? Small systems run higher per watt, so confirm the size actually fits your usage rather than being undersized to make the total look cheap.
- Are real costs being lumped in? A panel upgrade or re-roof is legitimate, but it shouldn't be buried so it inflates the per-watt figure you're comparing.
And one timing note for 2026: the 30% federal residential tax credit (Section 25D) ended after December 31, 2025 under the 2025 budget law. If a rep is still building their pitch around that 30% credit, their information is out of date, and I'd treat the rest of their math with the same caution. The federal residential credit changed for 2026, so keep it brief and check the current federal rules and any state or local programs for your area before you count on any incentive.
Use it as your first filter, not your last word
Price per watt is the best single number for cutting through sales noise, but it isn't the whole story. Equipment quality, warranty terms, the installer's track record, and the production estimate all matter too. Run the per-watt math first to see if a quote is even in the right ballpark, then dig into the details. If the number is fair and the rest holds up, you're in good shape. If it's high and nobody can explain why, keep shopping.
