Solar panels work in almost any weather — but not equally. Clouds, heat, and cold each affect output differently, and some of it is counterintuitive. Here's what actually happens to your production across conditions.
Cloudy days: less, but not zero
Panels run on light, not heat — and clouds don't block all of it. On an overcast day a typical system still produces roughly 10–25% of its sunny-day output from diffuse light (the exact amount depends on how thick the clouds are). You'll make less, but the system keeps working, and annual production estimates already bake in your area's typical cloud cover. A run of cloudy days is what your grid connection (or a battery) is for.
Hot weather: the surprising one
More heat does not mean more power — it's the opposite. Panels lose a little efficiency as they get hot. Every panel has a "temperature coefficient," and on a scorching roof a panel can run well above the air temperature and shed a few percent of its rated output. It's still producing plenty (hot days are usually sunny), just slightly less efficiently than the same sunlight on a cool day. It's also why airflow behind the panels matters.
Cold weather: efficient, if the sun's out
Cold is actually good for panel efficiency — they convert sunlight better at lower temperatures. The catch in winter is simply less daylight and a lower sun angle, plus snow. So a crisp, sunny winter day can be surprisingly productive; a short, gray one won't be.
Snow: usually sheds itself
Panels are smooth, tilted, and warm as the sun hits them, so snow typically slides off on its own within a day or two. Clearing it by hand is rarely worth the risk to you or the panels. Winter output dips with snow cover, but it's a seasonal dip, not a system problem.
What this means for your quote
A solid production estimate already factors in your local climate — sun hours, cloud cover, and temperature. If a quote's projected production looks far higher than your neighbors' or seems to ignore your weather, that's worth a closer look. Weather doesn't break solar; an over-optimistic estimate just makes the savings look bigger than they'll really be.
